Many years ago I read my father’s copy of ‘The Art of Biblical Narrative‘ by Prof. Robert Alter, and was immediately hooked. Alter concerns himself with analyzing the Bible as an enduring work of literature. To my mind, his ideas are compatible with a traditional outlook and understanding of the Torah (although not presented in those terms).

More recently, I received his translation of the Chumash as a gift from my family (thanks guys!). It is the best translation I have ever seen, exceeding even my previous favorite, the New JPS Translation. The text flows so smoothly that it is actually readable! In addition, there is a fine commentary, which has introduced me to scholarship that I had not previously encountered.
