Free Will
XGH linked to a recent NYT article that I must have missed, a summary of recent thought on the free will vs. determinism vs. randomness issue. The crux of it, for me:
“Even if your wife knows you will order the chile rellenos, you have to live your life to find out. To him that sounds like free will of a sort, for machines as well as for us. Our actions are determined, but so what? We still don’t know what they will be until the waiter brings the tray.”
Isn’t this the same as the problem addressed by traditional thinkers: if God knows what I am going to do, do I really have free choice?
And by the way - kudos to the commenter “haloscan” for the following quip:
Free Will?
Wasn’t that a movie starring a clinically depressed orca?
