Midwest Trip
Elan and I spent last weekend in Chicago and St. Louis on a college campus tour (U of Chicago, Northwestern, and WashU). On the way we visited Abe Lincoln’s tomb in Springfield, IL. Lincoln sure knew how to deliver a speech! In addition to the Gettysburg Address, there was a plaque with the text of his Second Inaugural Address, and the Springfield Farewell Address. They are really poetry!

After a tour of the Anheuser-Busch brewery (basically a series of pipes connecting huge tanks, with free beer at the end), we also checked out the Gateway Arch. What a graceful structure! Close up, it is even more striking than when seen from afar.
Perhaps the most striking discovery of the whole trip, however, was that perhaps the best kosher pastrami sandwich in the USA is to be found at Kohn’s Deli in St. Louis. Yes, I followed the recent discussion on Areivim and the consensus that Romanian deli in Chicago is the king. Well, we had just spent Shabbat in Chicago and enjoyed several types of deli from Romanian - but let me tell you, Kohn’s is the best I’ve ever had.
