SEO Tip of the Week

(Cross-posted with the Website Strategy Marketing blog):

One of the most important single factors in optimizing a web page is also one of the easiest to implement. The title bar of the page – which appears at the very top of the window displaying the page (across from the icons that minimize, size, and close the window) is one of the key criteria used by Google and the other search engines in determining if a page is a good match for a search. Many web sites simply name their company in the title bar. This does very little good in getting to the top of search results for relevant search terms – unless you are trying to be found when people search for your company by name – but this is probably going to happen anyway! What businesses need is for searchers to find them when searching for their product or service. Thus, a title bar stating ‘Blue Widgets, Free Shipping’ is bound to be more effective than ‘ABC Manufacturing Co’.
